Botz 9501 Karneval Liquid Glaze – glossy, transparent, with colourful specks
Botz 9501 Karneval liquid glaze is a glossy earthenware glaze for bisque-fired ceramics. It is transparent and rich in colour, and contains colourful specks. This gives a lively, speckled surface through which the colour of the clay body shows.
Karneval also works on red and black clay. You can use it on its own or combine it with plain-coloured glazes. It can be fired up to 1100 °C and is stable in the range of 1020–1060 °C. This suits earthenware and firing schedules in which several glazes are fired together.
Applying and firing the glaze
Karneval is ready to use. Stir it well so that the specks are evenly distributed. If needed, thin it with a little water.
- Stir the glaze well and thin with water if needed
- Apply with a brush to bisque-fired ceramics (bisque firing at 950 °C minimum)
- Allow to dry well and apply a further coat if needed
- Stable in the firing range of 1020–1060 °C, can be fired up to 1100 °C
- Leave the foot of the piece unglazed so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf
Combining Karneval and getting the best from it
As the glaze is transparent, the colour of your clay helps determine the result. Botz recommends it especially in combination with plain-coloured glazes, applied underneath or on top. These include 9348 Frühlingsgrün, 9349 Maisgelb and 9350 Sommerblau. The colourful specks remain visible as flecks, while the base colour comes from the plain glaze. Before glazing a larger piece, make a test piece with your sequence of layers, as the effect depends on the clay, the thickness of application and the combination.
