You need the Prym long darning needles (art. no. 124661) to mend holes in knitted and woven fabric with yarn or wool. The card holds 10 needles, assorted in sizes 1 to 5. That way you have the right needle to hand for both fine and heavier darning.

The needles are made of hardened steel and have a tapered point that pierces the material easily. The eye is smoothly polished and free of burrs. This makes the thread easier to pass through and protects it as you pull it through.

Which needle size should you choose?

The lower the number, the thicker the needle. Choose a needle that passes easily through the knitted or woven fabric with the darning thread without stretching the stitches. For fine fabrics and thin yarns, use a higher number; for thicker wool, a lower one. With the assortment, all five sizes are on one card, so you can try them out in one go.

How to darn a hole

If possible, stretch the hole over a darning mushroom or a smooth object. First stitch threads lengthways across the hole, going into the intact fabric around the hole. Then weave threads across, alternately over and under the lengthways threads. Do not pull the thread too tight, otherwise the darned area will pucker.
