Paper Hexagons 3/4 inch – 100 hexagons for English paper piecing patchwork

These paper hexagons in 3/4 inch (0.75 inch, approx. 1.9 cm) are hexagons for English paper piecing patchwork. You get 100 pieces, enough to start a larger project straight away, such as flower rosettes, patterns made of many small honeycombs or a quilt top.

In paper piecing, the fabric is folded around each hexagon and tacked in place. This way all the pieces keep exactly the same shape, and the corners meet neatly when you sew them together. The small 3/4 inch size suits fine patterns made of many individual pieces.

Working with the hexagons

Cut the fabric about 6 mm larger all around the hexagon so that you can fold it neatly to the back. Then fold the edges over the paper and tack them with long stitches or clips. Place two finished hexagons right sides together and sew them along one edge with small whipstitches. Only when a hexagon is sewn in on all sides do you remove the paper. This keeps the shape stable right to the end. A trial rosette with one centre piece and six hexagons shows you how much fabric to allow for your project.
