Artemio Pasta Machine – even sheets and colour gradients from polymer clay

The Artemio pasta machine (art. no. 18002081) rolls FIMO and other polymer clays into even sheets. It is operated by hand crank and needs no electricity. Rolling makes the clay more pliable, and you can blend colours cleanly or create colour gradients.

The machine has two steel rollers and a removable crank. With 9 settings, you can set sheet thicknesses from 0.3 to 2.6 mm, from very thin for jewellery details to thick for pendants or figure parts. It is suitable for modelling clays such as FIMO, Sculpey and Premo.

Rolling out polymer clay

First soften the clay by kneading it with your hands, shape it into a flat sheet and start on the thickest setting. Feed the sheet in edge first and turn the crank steadily. Then fold it over and roll it through again: this removes air bubbles and makes the clay even. Only when the sheet is smooth do you go thinner, one setting at a time. If you jump straight from the thickest to the thinnest setting, the clay tends to tear or wrinkle.

Blending colours and making gradients

Place two colours on top of each other, roll them through together and keep folding the sheet. The more often you repeat this, the more even the colour becomes; after only a few passes you get marbled effects. For gradients, cut triangles from sheets in two colours, place them side by side and roll them through several times.

Care and notes

After working, wipe the rollers with a cloth or a wet wipe, especially when changing colours, so that no residue is transferred to light colours. The machine is not dishwasher safe. Once you have used a machine for modelling clay, do not use it for food again.
