HORADAM Naturals Trio Air – vegan watercolour paint made from earth pigments

The Schmincke HORADAM Naturals Trio Air is a set of three 5 ml tubes of watercolour paint. You can use it on paper and card, and it combines the properties of watercolour and gouache: the paints dry matt and are mostly semi-transparent. According to Schmincke, they are made exclusively from natural earth pigments and plant resins/saps, and are vegan. The binder is gum arabic.

The trio is taken from the 16-colour range of HORADAM Naturals. It lets you try the series with three well-matched shades before adding more colours.

The three colours in the trio

The Trio Air contains three natural shades that complement each other and can be mixed with all watercolour and gouache paints:

• 110 Rügen chalk: light, transparent white
• 680 Caucasus earth: olive green
• 720 Green Slate: light grey-green

Working with HORADAM Naturals

You can use the paint straight from the tube or thinned with water. Undiluted, it is stronger and more opaque; with more water it gives transparent glazes. The paints are suitable for all types of paper and card. Because they remain water-soluble after drying, you can reactivate dried paint on the palette and keep using it. Put small amounts of each shade on the palette and mix them with water before applying them to the sheet. That way you can see how far they can be diluted.

Who is the trio suitable for?

If you are looking for matt, earthy colour effects and value vegan paints made from natural pigments, the trio is a good introduction to the series. If you would like more colour variety, combine the shades with other Naturals colours or with other watercolour and gouache paints.
