Schmincke AKADEMIE Aquarell Dot Card – all 40 colours to activate and test
The Schmincke AKADEMIE Aquarell Dot Card is a colour chart showing all 40 shades of the AKADEMIE Aquarell range as small dots, each labelled with its name and number. You activate the dots with a wet brush and try the colours out directly on paper.
This way you can see before buying how the colours mix, how vivid they are and how transparently they go on. It helps you choose the colours you would like to order individually afterwards.
How to test the colours
Each dot can be used like a half pan. This order of steps helps when testing:
- Dip the brush in clean water and moisten the colour dot you want.
- Wait a few seconds until the colour dissolves, then pick it up with the brush.
- Apply it to watercolour paper, once strong and once diluted with plenty of water, to compare vibrancy and transparency.
- To mix, activate a second colour and blend the two on the paper or on a palette.
Tips for choosing colours
Rinse the brush thoroughly between colours, otherwise you will stain the dots with one another. Test on the paper you intend to paint on later, as the paper affects how the colour looks and flows. According to Schmincke, the colours of the AKADEMIE Aquarell range are mostly lightfast (4–5 stars), free from cadmium and cobalt, and can be reused once dry. After drying, the card serves as a colour chart: you can see the name and number of each colour and reorder your favourites individually.
