HORADAM Naturals Trio Earth – three earth tones in a paint between watercolour and gouache

The Schmincke HORADAM Naturals Trio Earth contains three 5 ml tubes of watercolour paint in warm earth tones: 620 Yellow ochre, 640 Red bolus and 650 Lalvarit violet. According to the manufacturer, the paints are made exclusively from natural earth pigments plus plant resins and saps, and are vegan.

HORADAM Naturals combines properties of watercolour and gouache: the paints dry matt and are mostly semi-transparent. The Earth trio is one of four selections (Fire, Water, Earth, Air) that Schmincke has put together from the line's 16-colour range. It lets you try out the line with a harmonious choice of three colours.

Working with Naturals paints

You can use the paints neat or diluted with water. Neat, they appear stronger and more opaque; diluted, they give more transparent glazes. As the paints become water-soluble again after drying, you can re-wet dried residues on the palette and gently lift areas on the paper. Bear in mind that a fresh wet layer can slightly loosen the layer beneath. When overpainting, therefore, work quickly and with light pressure.

Which colours can you mix?

Yellow ochre, red bolus and violet cover warm earth tones from yellow through reddish brown to muted violets. You can mix them with one another and combine them with all Schmincke watercolour and gouache paints. This lets you extend the palette with colours outside the trio. For landscapes, portraits or sketches in muted tones, you get a calm basic palette.
