The da Vinci TOP-ACRYL brush set series 4220 contains four brushes for acrylic painting: three flat brushes in sizes 6, 10 and 14 and one round brush in size 6, designed above all for thickly applied paint. According to the manufacturer, the red-brown synthetic fibres are developed specially for heavy-body painting and are very springy and keep their shape. That is useful when you want to apply or spread thicker paint firmly and need the brush to spring back into shape after each stroke.

The brushes have a short handle and are made in Germany. As well as acrylic paints, they are also suitable for fabric painting. With the three flat brushes and the round brush you can cover the main tasks: the flat shapes are for painting areas and creating edges, while the round brush is for details, lines and smaller shapes.

Working with heavy-body acrylic paint

It is best to apply heavy-body paint undiluted or with just a little painting medium. With the flat brush you pull paint out in broad strokes or use the edge to make crisp lines. The round brush is suited to outlines, fine lines and small details. Acrylic paint dries quickly and is then very hard to remove. Wash the brushes with water and a little mild soap straight after painting and reshape the fibres. Do not leave them standing in a jar of water, as the fibres will bend.

Short handle – what does it mean for you?

You hold brushes with a short handle close to the painting surface, for example on a table, on a pad or when working on smaller formats. If you prefer to paint at an easel with more distance from the picture, brushes with a long handle are more comfortable.
