The da Vinci Series 23 bristle brush is a flat artist's brush with white China bristles for acrylic and oil paints. You can use it for decorative painting and folk art painting, as well as for hobby and school use. The bristles are set in an aluminium ferrule, and the long, round handle is made of raw wood. The series comes in 13 sizes from 1 to 24; choose the size from the options.

Bristle brushes suit work on plain and rough painting surfaces. The bristles pick up and apply paint strongly, and the flat shape gives broad, even strokes and clean edges.

Working with the flat brush

Load the paint across the full width of the brush and wipe off excess paint on the edge of the palette. Use the broad side to cover areas, and the narrow edge to draw lines and make clean finishes. The long handles keep your hand at a distance from the painting surface, which helps when working at an easel. Wash the brush out straight after painting. Acrylic paint dries hard in the bristles and can then hardly be removed. Remove oil paint with a suitable brush cleaner. Store the brush lying flat or hanging with the bristles pointing down so that the bristles do not bend.

Which size to choose

Use the small numbers for narrow areas and edges, and the larger ones for broad areas and backgrounds. Series 23 has a long handle. For close-up work, da Vinci also offers bristle brushes with a short handle, such as Series 29.
