The Faber-Castell Art & Graphic Collection wooden case (art. no. 110085) is a 125-piece artist set for drawing with coloured pencils, creating watercolour effects with watercolour pencils and blending softly with pastel pencils. Everything sits in a wooden case stained wenge, with a large logo inside the lid. According to Faber-Castell, the set is a limited special edition.

The case holds 36 colours each of Polychromos artists' coloured pencils, Albrecht Dürer artists' watercolour pencils and Pitt Pastel artists' pencils. There is also a small Pitt Monochrome assortment (including graphite and charcoal pencils) and accessories. With three techniques in one set, you can find out which suits you without having to put together individual pencils.

Which pencils for what?

The three ranges complement each other. With the Polychromos coloured pencils you draw details and outlines in 36 colours. Apply the Albrecht Dürer watercolour pencils dry and let them blend into areas of colour with a wet brush. The Pitt Pastel pencils are suited to soft transitions and blending. Use the Pitt Monochrome assortment with graphite and charcoal pencils for underdrawing, shading and strong contrasts.

Combining the techniques

Work from wet to dry: lay in the watercolour areas first and let them dry completely. Then add details with the coloured pencils and soft accents with the pastel pencils. Watercolour pencils need a paper that can take water, otherwise it will buckle. For pastel, a paper with a little texture helps, as more pigment stays on the surface. Pastel areas smudge easily, so it is best to store finished work with a sheet of paper in between.
