Schmincke HORADAM watercolour tin, single-row metal box, 12 half pans

Schmincke HORADAM watercolour box by Hazel Soan – slim and travel-friendly with 12 colours

The Schmincke HORADAM single-row metal watercolour box holds 12 half pans in an exceptionally slim metal case. It is designed for urban sketching, travel and workshops and belongs to the Hazel Soan edition. It is the slimmest watercolour box in the Schmincke range.

All twelve half pans sit in a single row on one rail. This keeps the box flat and easy to pack alongside a sketchbook and brush. The shades are 208, 220, 656, 667, 653, 357, 365, 351, 476, 494, 492 and 483. They have been put together for landscape and travel watercolours. You can mix further shades yourself from the twelve colours.

Getting started with the pans

Watercolour in the pan is dry and is only activated when you paint. Here is how to go about it:

• Before painting, put a small drop of water on the colours you need and let it soak in briefly.
• Lift the colour with a wet brush. For strong shades, use plenty of paint and little water; for delicate glazes, use more water.
• Mix shades on a palette rather than in the pan, so the colours in the box stay clean.
• After painting, leave the box open to dry before you close it. This stops damp colours from sticking to the lid.

Who is this box for?

This box suits you if you sketch on the move and want to take up as little space as possible in your luggage. With twelve shades you can go a long way for landscapes and travel sketches if you mix. If you need a wider choice of colours, the HORADAM Aquarell series also includes metal boxes with 24 half pans.
