Van Gogh Watercolour Pocket Box – 12 + 3 Colours with Brush and Mixing Tray

The Van Gogh Watercolour Pocket Box by Royal Talens is a watercolour set with 12 half pans plus 3 bonus colours, 15 colours in total. It also comes with a synthetic round brush (size 6) and a mixing tray. Everything is packed in a plastic box, so you can start painting straight away.

Royal Talens classes Van Gogh watercolours as a colour range for students and artists. According to the manufacturer, the colours are brilliant, transparent and intense, with high tinting strength. Thanks to their purity and consistent viscosity, they are easy to work with and mix. Most colours reach the highest lightfastness rating +++ (100+ years under museum conditions), and a few reach rating ++ (25–100 years). They are produced in Holland.

The colours

The 12 basic colours cover every colour range: Chinese White 108, Permanent Lemon Yellow 254, Azo Yellow Medium 269, Permanent Red Light 370, Madder Lake Deep 331, Ultramarine Deep 506, Sky Blue Phthalo 535, Sap Green 623, Viridian 616, Burnt Sienna 411, Yellow Ochre 227 and Payne's Grey 708. Quinacridone Rose 366, Prussian Blue 508 and Burnt Umber 409 are added as bonus colours. With cool and warm yellows, reds and blues you can mix many more shades yourself, for example greens from lemon yellow and ultramarine. You can download the colour chart (Dot Card) for the Pocket Box from the manufacturer.

Working with the set

Moisten the pans briefly with a little water and let the paint soften for a moment. Then mix on the mixing tray until the paint reaches the intensity you want. Because watercolours are transparent, it is best to work from light to dark tones and let each layer dry before applying the next. Rinse the brush when changing colour so the pans stay clean. The size 6 round brush covers larger areas and paints thin lines with the tip.
