The Schmincke metal tin is a watercolour set with 12 half pans of AKADEMIE watercolour, designed for getting started with watercolour painting. According to Schmincke, the paint is made with artist pigments in high concentration, and all shades in the range are cadmium-free. Names such as "Kadmiumrotton" refer to the shade only.

The tin has room for 12 more half pans. You can start with a manageable basic palette and add the shades you use most often later. The range comprises 24 shades in pans, and the colours can be mixed with Horadam watercolour from Schmincke.

Which colours you can mix

The twelve shades cover yellow, red, blue, green, earth colours and black. With Hellgelb zitron, Karmin and Ultramarin, for example, you can mix orange, violet and further shades of green. Because the palette is deliberately small, you quickly learn how the pigments behave when mixing. According to Schmincke, the colours are easy to control for colour gradients.

Getting started

Moisten the pan with a wet brush and work the paint until it has a creamy consistency. Mix larger quantities on the palette before applying them to the paper. With more water the shade becomes lighter and more transparent, with less water it is stronger. Let the pans dry after painting before you close the tin.

Expanding and combining

You can fill the twelve free spaces with further half pans from the AKADEMIE range. If you would like more shades from the start, the range is also available in a metal tin with 24 half pans. The paint can also be mixed with Horadam watercolour, aqua bronzes and aqua auxiliaries from Schmincke.
