The Van Gogh Pocket Box by Royal Talens is a watercolour set with 24 half pans in a plastic box. A round synthetic-hair brush (size 6) and a sponge are included. That keeps your paints and brush together in one compact set, whether you are sketching on location or painting at your desk.

The colour range at a glance

The 24 colours cover all the basic ranges: yellows and oranges, red and pink, violet, blue, green and earth colours such as sienna, umber and Vandyke brown. Opaque White (106) lets you add highlights when needed. Most colours have the highest lightfastness rating, +++, and a few have ++. Your paintings will therefore last well if you protect them from direct sunlight.

Working with the half pans

You activate watercolour paint from the pan with water. The steps:

• Moisten the paint with a little water one to two minutes beforehand, so that it dissolves more easily.
• Pick up paint with a wet brush and mix it on a palette to the shade you want.
• For delicate glazes use plenty of water; for strong tones use more paint.
• Dab the brush on the sponge before you change colour. This keeps the pans clean.
• Let the paints dry before you close the box.
