Botz 9606 Lava Liquid Glaze – Glossy Orange-Red for Earthenware and Raku

Botz 9606 Lava liquid glaze is a ready-to-use, glossy orange-red glaze for earthenware, brushed onto bisque-fired ceramics. It gives good coverage and a lively, textured finish. According to Botz, it glows particularly strongly in a raku firing, and the glaze is suitable for raku. The tin holds 800 ml, enough for larger pieces or several projects.

Important for the result: Lava tends to show white edges. This happens where the glaze lies thin, for example on rims and curves. Apply it thickly. Fire with a supply of oxygen in the kiln if possible, or do not pack the pieces too closely.

Applying the glaze

Stir the glaze thoroughly before use, as the colour particles settle in the tin. If necessary, you can thin it with a little water. Then brush it onto the bisque-fired piece. Let each coat dry well before you continue.

• Bisque firing at 950 °C minimum
• Apply thickly, especially on edges and rims, to reduce white edges
• If necessary, apply a further coat once the first is dry

Firing and effects

Lava is stable in the firing range from 1020 to 1060 °C. The colour looks best when oxygen reaches the kiln. If your kiln does not allow this, leave a little space between the pieces. In a raku firing, the glaze looks very bright according to Botz. For lively effects, you can brush Lava unevenly over Botz 9607. Make a test piece first to see how the two glazes behave together in your kiln.
