Botz 9607 Koralle liquid glaze – strong, glossy red for earthenware and raku

Botz 9607 Koralle is a ready-to-use, glossy liquid glaze in a strong red with an interesting surface texture. It belongs to the earthenware glaze group and gives good coverage. You apply it with a brush to bisque-fired ceramics. The red glows particularly well in a raku firing, and the glaze is raku-suitable according to Botz.

The colour depends heavily on the firing temperature: at a low temperature Koralle looks more orange, while in the recommended range it shows the strong red. The glaze also tends to form white edges. So that you know this before you glaze, you will find below how to deal with it.

Application and firing

Stir the glaze well and thin it with a little water if needed. Apply it with a brush to the bisque-fired ceramics (bisque firing at least 950 °C) and leave it to dry thoroughly. If needed, repeat the application.

• Firing range: stable at 1020–1060 °C
• Supply oxygen during firing
• Do not place the pieces too close together in the kiln
• At a lower temperature the shade turns out more orange

White edges and effects

Koralle tends to form white borders on edges. Apply the glaze thickly, especially on rims and edges. If you simply want a strong red, stick to an opaque application. For effects, you can brush Koralle unevenly over with Botz 9606, which creates lively transitions. A test piece shows you in advance how colour and texture turn out in your kiln and on your clay.
