Vlieseline Decovil 1 – iron-on interfacing with a leather-like feel

Decovil 1 from Vlieseline (Freudenberg) is a heavyweight iron-on interfacing for bags, belts, hats and fabric baskets. It is shape-retaining, springy and tear-resistant, and gives the fused fabric a firm, leather-like feel. Because it is crease-resistant and keeps clean cut edges, edges and fold lines hold their shape even with use.

The interfacing suits home decor fabrics, cotton and synthetics. It is sold by the metre in a 90 cm width, so planning the quantity is easy: work out the length of your pattern piece and add the seam allowances.

How to iron on Decovil 1

Place the interfacing with the coated side on the wrong side of the fabric and cover it with a damp cloth. Press the moderately hot iron down on one area at a time for about 6 seconds without sliding it, as the interfacing would otherwise slip. Then leave the piece to cool lying flat for approx. 30 minutes so that the bond sets. Test the setting first on an offcut of your fabric.

What it is suitable for and what to bear in mind

At 400 g/m², Decovil 1 is a sturdy interfacing for bag bodies, belts, hat brims and fabric baskets that need to keep their shape. Vlieseline also offers the lighter Decovil Light. It is the better choice for softly draping bags or fine fabrics; for firm shapes, use Decovil 1.
