BeaverCraft S08 – Wood Carving Set with 8 Knives, Leather Strop and Polishing Compound
The BeaverCraft S08 is a wood carving set with 8 knives in a green roll case. You can use it to carve figures, details and chip-carving patterns and to hollow out spoons. A leather strop and a green-grey polishing compound are included, so you can strop the blades yourself. The set is aimed at anyone starting out with carving and comes with a suitable knife for different jobs.
According to the manufacturer, the blades are made of high-carbon steel. They have a 20° edge, which BeaverCraft designs for softwood. The handles are made of wood and sit comfortably in the hand.
The 8 knives at a glance
Two spoon knives (according to the manufacturer 25 and 30 mm in diameter) hollow out spoon bowls and dishes. The other knives cover rough removal, details and chip carving. Use the larger sloyd knife C1 to rough out the blank, and the small knives to work out faces, edges and patterns.
- SK1 and SK2: spoon knives
- C1: sloyd knife
- C2: bench knife
- C6: chip carving knife
- C7: knife for small details
- C8: detail knife
- C12: skew knife
Sharpening the blades and choosing suitable wood
The 20° edge cuts softwood such as lime (linden) cleanly and easily. In hardwood the fine edge goes blunt more quickly, so stick to soft woods. When the edge starts to dull, strop the blade on the leather strop: apply some polishing compound to the leather and draw the blade over it in smooth strokes, spine first, with the cutting edge facing away from the direction of the stroke. Alternate the sides of the blade evenly. A regularly stropped knife cuts more cleanly and needs less pressure, which makes working safer.
Choosing a set
If you mainly want to carve spoons, a smaller set with a spoon knife is also enough. The 8-piece set also offers knives for details and chip carving, so that one set lets you carve figures and decorated surfaces as well. You can keep all the knives neatly organised in the roll case.
