BeaverCraft P12/02 – V-gouge for deep and fine lines
The BeaverCraft P12/02 palm gouge is a straight V-tool (sweep No. 12) for wood carving. With its 60° blade angle you cut deep and fine V-shaped lines, grooves and outlines, for example for details on figures, lettering or textures. The blade is made of carbon steel and, according to the manufacturer, is hand-sharpened and honed, so it is sharp and ready to use straight from the box.
The handle is small and sits in the palm of your hand. It is made of ash and treated with oil. With a total length of 140 mm and a blade length of 75 mm, you hold the gouge close to the cutting edge and work accurately.
Working with the V-gouge
Clamp your workpiece firmly or secure it on a non-slip surface. One hand guides the gouge by the handle, while you always keep the other hand behind the cutting edge, never in front of it. Place the tip on the line and push the gouge with pressure from your hand and shoulder, in the direction of the grain. Several light passes give a cleaner, deeper groove than a single heavy cut. Cutting against the grain easily tears the wood, so turn the workpiece and cut from the opposite direction.
Softwood and hardwood
According to the manufacturer, the P12/02 is suitable for softwood and hardwood. Softwood such as lime (linden) is easier to cut, and the edge stays sharp for longer. With hardwood you need more force and take thinner shavings. A fine edge wears more quickly there. For a carving with deep lines, it is therefore best to start in softwood. Carbon steel can rust in damp conditions, so store the gouge in a dry place.
