Prym Natural Wooden Darning Egg – for Darning Socks and Woollen Fabric
The Prym Natural darning egg (art. no. 611591) is a support for darning small holes in socks, knitwear and woollen fabric. It is made of natural-coloured wood and measures Ø 49 mm × 65 mm. You slip it under the hole, so the fabric lies evenly curved and taut and you can work the darning stitches neatly.
The 65 mm measurement is the length of the darning egg, and the diameter is 49 mm. Its compact size sits comfortably in the hand and fits inside socks and gloves. It is less suitable for large holes, whole heels or long leg sections.
How to darn a hole
Pull the sock over the darning egg so that the hole sits on the curve, and hold the fabric in place with one hand. First stretch parallel threads across the hole, starting and ending each one a little way into the intact fabric around the hole. Then weave across them, going alternately over and under the stretched threads. Do not pull the threads too tight, otherwise the area will pucker and later press inside your shoe. A yarn of similar thickness to the original makes the darn look flatter and less noticeable.
