Hahnemühle masking tape is used to hold watercolour paper in place and to mask off borders or reserved areas in a painting. The set contains four rolls of 20 m each in widths of 6, 15, 20 and 25 mm, so you can choose the border width that suits your picture.

According to the manufacturer, the tape is waterproof and can be painted over with watercolour paints. It peels off cleanly without leaving residue and leaves crisp paint edges. It is vegan and acid-free.

Applying the tape

Stick the tape onto dry paper and press the edges down firmly so that no paint runs underneath. After painting, wait until the picture is completely dry. Then peel the tape off slowly at a low angle, rather than pulling it away sharply. This keeps the paper surface intact and the white border clean.

Which width and which paper?

Use the 6 mm tape to mask off narrow lines and details, and the 25 mm tape for wide borders. According to Hahnemühle, the tape is particularly suitable for surface-sized papers. Textured papers are more delicate, so peel the tape off with particular care.
