Herriot from Juniper Moon Farm is a DK yarn in 100 % baby alpaca for jumpers, shawls, hats and other knitting projects that should feel soft and warm to wear. One skein weighs 100 g and has a length of approx. 200 m (219 yds). You can use this figure to work out the yarn requirements for your pattern reliably. The yarn is made in Peru. Baby alpaca is a fine, soft fibre with a pleasant handle. Alpaca fibres have little elasticity. Knitted pieces can therefore stretch a little with wear, especially jumpers and cardigans. For garments, a fairly firm tension is worthwhile.
What Herriot is suited to
In DK weight with a recommended needle size of 3.75–4.5 mm, Herriot knits up into jumpers, shawls, hats or scarves with a soft, supple drape. According to the manufacturer, the tension is 21–24 stitches over 10 cm in stocking stitch. What matters is the tension given in your pattern; the figure on the ball band is only a guide. Herriot works well for patterns written for DK or light worsted yarn.
Care and quantities
Hand wash items made from Herriot and dry them flat. Do not wring, tumble dry or bleach, as this keeps the stitch definition intact. Iron only at a low temperature. Plan the quantity from the length of approx. 200 m per skein and the yarn requirements given in your pattern. Buy all the skeins for a project at the same time if possible, from the same dye lot, so that no colour differences show.
