The LYKKE needle gauge is a measuring template made of mango wood that you can use to determine the size of your knitting needles and to measure your tension. It is an alternative to the usual plastic gauges and, at 7 × 18.5 cm and 5 mm thick, sits solidly in the hand.

You know the situation: the size is no longer legible on needles without a printed marking, or the pattern gives US sizes. The needle gauge covers needles from 1.75 to 12 mm, which corresponds to US 00 to 17. That way you find the diameter without guessing.

How to use the needle gauge

Insert the needle into the holes and look for the smallest one it passes through without force. The number next to it shows the diameter in mm or as a US size. Do not force the needle through, otherwise you will measure too small. For needles with a thicker cable or connector, measure on the needle shaft.

Measuring tension

For measuring tension, the needle gauge has two notches: one for 10 cm and one for 4 inches. This helps if your pattern gives the tension in one unit or the other. Place the template on your stretched tension swatch and count the stitches within the notch. Only measure once the swatch lies flat, so that the result is not distorted.
