Natural round basket cane – rattan for weaving baskets and decorations

Natural round basket cane (Peddigrohr) is a rattan weaving material you can use to weave baskets, furniture or decorations. It comes from the climbing palm Calamus rotang from Indonesia. The pack contains 500 g, which is enough for larger projects or several smaller ones. Choose your size from the options.

When dry, cane is stiff and breaks easily. Only once it has been soaked in warm water does it become flexible and can be shaped into bases, sides and borders.

Working with cane

Put the amount you need into warm water until the cane is supple. Then weave it while it is still damp and bends easily. If it becomes stiff again as you work, dip it briefly in water once more. As it dries, the material shrinks slightly, so the weave sits more firmly. A common mistake is to kink dry cane too sharply: it will then break at the bend.

Natural dyeing

If you would like to give the pale natural shade a little warmth, you can soak the cane in black tea and dye it naturally. The depth of colour depends on the strength of the tea. It is therefore best to try it first on a short piece.
