Round natural basketry cane – rattan for weaving baskets and decorations
This round basketry cane (125 g) is a rattan weaving material that suits baskets, small pieces of furniture and decorations. It comes from the climbing palm Calamus rotang, grown in Indonesia. When dry the cane is firm; once soaked in warm water it becomes pliable and is easy to shape.
Choose your size from the options. The cane is natural in colour and can be dyed, for example by soaking it in black tea.
Working with basketry cane
Rattan only becomes supple when damp. Work with dampened cane and soak only as much as you are weaving at any one time.
- Soak the cane in warm water until it bends easily
- Keep it damp while weaving; if it becomes brittle again, briefly re-wet it
- To dye it, soak it in black tea before weaving
- Leave the finished piece to dry in the air, where it will keep its shape
Which size to choose
Thin cane suits fine weaving and small decorations, while thicker cane is better for sturdier baskets and frames. The same type of cane is also available in a larger 500 g pack if you need more material.
