Prym Curved Ruler for Armholes and Sleeve Heads – Drawing Curves on Sewing Patterns
The Prym curved ruler (art. no. 611501) is a dressmaking ruler made of transparent plastic, used to draw curves for sewing patterns. You can use it to mark armholes, sleeve heads, shoulders and necklines, as well as waist and hip lines and the crotch seam of trousers, skirts, shirts and blouses, on pattern paper or directly on the fabric.
The straight, gridded scale of 2.5 × 40 cm helps with buttonholes and hems. The tapering, rounded scale gives you the curve for shaping. Because the ruler is see-through, you can see the lines and markings underneath. It complements the Prym dressmaking ruler.
Drawing a curve
Place the ruler against the key points of your pattern so that the curve matches the line you want, and draw along the edge. For long curves such as the waist and hip, move the ruler along and overlap the new line with the section already drawn; this gives a smooth transition without a kink. For the sleeve head, finish by checking that the curve joins the shoulder seam and sleeve seam cleanly.
Which scale to use
Use the straight scale for straight lines, buttonhole spacing and hem widths. Use the rounded edge for anything that curves: armhole, neckline, shoulder, waist, hip and crotch seam.
