DMC Coton Perlé No. 8 – shiny perle cotton for fine embroidery

DMC Coton Perlé No. 8 (art. no. 116) is a twisted perle cotton made from 100% cotton, for outlines, decorative stitches and accents in embroidery. Mercerisation gives it a silky surface with a distinct shine. One ball weighs 10 g and has a length of approx. 80 m. That makes it easy to estimate how much you need for outlines and smaller motifs. Choose your colour from the options.

Unlike stranded cotton, perle cotton cannot be split into individual strands. You stitch it as it is and get even, slightly raised lines. No. 8 is roughly equivalent to 3 strands of stranded cotton.

What to use Coton Perlé for

The thread suits outlines and accents, traditional and modern decorative stitches and freehand embroidery. Typical techniques are Hardanger and Richelieu, as well as blackwork, redwork, needlepoint, smocking and appliqué. It can also be used for crochet. Monograms, table linen and home textiles get a clear, slightly raised line from this shiny thread. For cross stitch, perle cotton No. 8 only works on coarse fabric, such as 18-count linen, because the thread is thicker than a strand of stranded cotton.

Tips for stitching

As the thread cannot be split, the width of the line depends on your fabric and needle. Choose a needle whose eye takes the thread without friction, and work with lengths of about an arm's length. This keeps the twisted surface smooth as you pull it through and the shine even. For larger areas or several motifs in the same colour, allow for several balls of approx. 80 m each.
