Botz stoneware glaze 9897 Lilaeffekt is a liquid, matt effect glaze for stoneware with a firing range of 1220–1280 °C. It is lavender-coloured with a blue base and light and dark purple effects. The colour depends on the firing temperature: at 1220 °C the purple tends to be slightly bluer, at 1250 °C it gives a matt, light purple glaze, and in a thin application a blue base with light and dark purple effects. At 1280 °C the purple becomes slightly redder.

Thanks to the high firing temperature, the stoneware becomes frost-proof and vitrified according to Botz, so it absorbs no water. This makes the glaze suitable for ceramics that will also be kept outdoors, such as plant pots or garden decorations.

Applying the glaze

Stir the glaze well before applying so that the pigments and other components are evenly distributed. Then apply it with a brush in two to three coats, letting each coat dry thoroughly. Three coats are recommended; on the lower part of the piece two are enough. The effects develop in the firing: the thinner the application, the more the blue base with its light and dark purple effects comes through.

Firing and avoiding runs

Fire within the range of 1220–1280 °C. Botz recommends 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold. The glaze tends to run, especially at high temperatures or in a thick application. Leave the foot of the piece unglazed and apply only a thin coat on the lower third. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. A test piece will show you beforehand how the purple tone and effects turn out on your clay and in your kiln.
