Botz stoneware glaze 9899 Travertin – satin ochre with blue-green effects
Botz stoneware glaze 9899 Travertin is a liquid glaze for stoneware with a firing range of 1220–1280 °C. It gives a satin, ochre-coloured surface with blue-green effects and a very earthy look. It suits vessels, bowls and plates that should look natural and stony. The bottle contains 800 ml, enough to glaze several pieces.
According to Botz, the glaze is suitable for tableware and drinking vessels. Fired within the firing range, the stoneware becomes vitrified and absorbs no water, and it is also frost-resistant. The glaze is opaque and has a textured, slightly speckled character.
How firing temperature changes the colour
Travertin looks different depending on the firing. This helps you choose the temperature if you want a particular result.
- 1220 °C: soft matt, slightly greenish ochre-yellow glaze with very fine effects
- 1250 °C: satin, mostly ochre with cream and blue effects; terracotta orange shows through where applied very thinly
- 1280 °C: satin with a particularly attractive play of ochre and blue-green; terracotta orange shows through where applied very thinly and on edges
Application and firing
Stir the glaze well before use and apply 2 to 3 coats with a brush; according to Botz, 2 coats is preferable. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. The terracotta orange show-through and the colour effects appear mainly where the glaze lies thinner, for example on edges. So the way you apply it controls the colour play. Botz recommends 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold as the best firing temperature. A test piece made from your own clay shows you beforehand how coat thickness and temperature work for you.
