Botz Stoneware Glaze 9879 Hellblaueffekt – glossy sky blue with run effects

Botz stoneware glaze 9879 Hellblaueffekt is a liquid, glossy effect glaze in sky blue for stoneware, with a firing range of 1220–1280 °C. It is opaque and forms light run effects during firing, which vary in strength depending on the temperature.

At temperatures of 1220–1280 °C the glaze is frost-proof and watertight, so it does not absorb water. The tub contains 800 ml, which you apply directly with a brush.

How the glaze looks at different temperatures

The colour depends on the firing temperature. At 1250 °C, the firing temperature recommended by Botz, you get a bright light blue with white effects. If you prefer a greyer or paler result, choose the ends of the firing range:

• 1220 °C: greyish blue with small light effects
• 1250 °C: bright light blue with white effects
• 1280 °C: stronger effects, an even paler blue

Application and firing

Stir the glaze well before use, as some of the components settle at the bottom. Apply 2 to 3 coats with a brush, ideally three, and let each coat dry thoroughly. An uneven application gives attractive, light run effects. An even application looks more uniform. Fire at 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold.

Making the most of the run effects

The light effects are stronger where the glaze lies thicker. Leave the foot of the piece unglazed and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash so that nothing sticks. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how the thickness of application and the temperature affect the result.
