Mayco Engobe EG-002 Speckled Buff – matt ivory with brown speckles

Mayco Stoneware Engobe Speckled Buff EG-002 gives stoneware a matt, ivory-coloured surface with fine brown speckles. You get the look of a pale, speckled clay without changing your clay body.

Fired to cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in oxidation, it produces a warm, speckled shade. In reduction firing at cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the appearance remains largely unchanged. The engobe can be used on pale, red and dark clay bodies and serves as a base for further glazes and decorating techniques.

Application

Stir the engobe thoroughly before use. Apply two to three even coats with a soft fan brush and let each coat dry. Do not work the surface with the brush for too long, otherwise the brown speckles will smear instead of spreading evenly. The engobe suits wet clay, greenware and softly bisque-fired ware. You can use it for sgraffito, majolica, marbling, screen printing and wax resist.

Glaze over the top and dinnerware

Under transparent and semi-transparent glazes, the speckles generally remain clearly visible. Opaque glazes can hide them partly or completely. The engobe can also affect the flow and firing result of the glaze on top. Clay body, thickness of application, glaze and firing temperature all change the result, so it is worth doing a test firing with your own clay and glaze combination before larger projects.

According to Mayco, the engobe is suitable for dinnerware only under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze, you must not use it for dinnerware. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means: non-hazardous (no labelling required).

Choosing from the series

EG-002 is one of the engobes in the Mayco Stoneware series. There are other engobe colours too, such as White EG-001, Brick Red EG-003, Dark Brown EG-004, Black EG-005 and Terracotta EG-007. Choose EG-002 if you want your piece to look pale and naturally speckled.
