Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-13 Grapel – ceramic glaze for details and designs
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-13 Grapel is a ceramic glaze for wet clay and for earthenware and stoneware bisque, 236 ml (8 oz). The glaze stays where you put it without running, so you can paint fine lines, details and multicoloured designs without the colours bleeding into each other. One coat gives a translucent result; for full coverage Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. The surface fires glossy, so you do not need a clear glaze.
Stroke & Coat is a series with many colours that can be mixed together. Thinned with water, it gives softer glazing and watercolour effects.
Application and firing
Apply the glaze with a brush and let each coat dry before applying the next. For an evenly opaque surface you need 2–3 coats. Mayco formulates the series for cone 06/05. It can be fired from cone 06 to cone 10, oxidising or reducing.
- Cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- Cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- Cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- Cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
High firing and test piece
How Grapel behaves at cone 6 is given on the label, according to Mayco. Within the series the colours react differently at high temperatures: some become lighter or transparent. Before starting a larger piece, therefore, do a test firing with your own clay and firing schedule. In the majolica technique the glaze does not run and does not mix with the colours underneath.
Tableware and safety
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI, that the product is exempt from hazard labelling.
