The COLINEO flat brush from da Vinci's series 1821 is a synthetic brush for oil and acrylic paints. It is intended as an alternative to Kolinsky sable hair and is meant to offer similar properties without containing any natural hair. The fibre blend consists of straight and wavy synthetic fibres of different lengths. It gives extra fine tips, precise point formation, high elasticity and good paint pick-up.
The brush has a silver-coloured ferrule and a long handle made of water-resistant laminated wood. The long handle lets you work at a little distance from the canvas and keep an overview of the painting. The brush is made in Germany. Choose your size from the options.
Working with the flat brush
Use the broad side to apply paint evenly over larger areas. The narrow edge makes clean lines and contours, and the fine tip is for details. For glazing and transparent techniques, thin the paint with painting medium (oil) or with water or acrylic medium, and build up the picture in thin layers. The elasticity of the fibres helps you control the stroke. Do not load too much paint: otherwise it collects at the ferrule and is hard to wash out later.
Care and choosing a size
Wash the brush thoroughly after painting: with acrylic, before the paint dries; with oil, using brush cleaner and then mild soap. Store it lying flat or with the fibres pointing upwards so that the tip keeps its shape. Small numbers in the series suit details and small formats, while larger numbers cover areas more quickly.
