BeaverCraft SK5S Spoon Carving Knife – Hook Knife for Hollowing Spoons and Bowls
The BeaverCraft SK5S spoon carving knife is a hook knife for hollowing out wooden spoons, bowls, plates and cups. With the curved blade you cut the hollow of a spoon bowl or dish out of the wood, without having to laboriously recreate the curve with straight knives.
The blade is made of carbon steel and is ground on both sides. This means you can use the knife in either your right or left hand. The 200 mm long oak handle can be held with one or both hands. The knife is designed for removing material quickly. You then smooth the surface with a finer knife. A leather sheath protects the blade when you are not carving.
How to hollow out a spoon bowl
Before hollowing, rough out the outline of the spoon with a saw or axe. The hook knife only comes into play once the outer shape is in place. Clamp the workpiece firmly or support it securely so that both hands are free for the knife.
- Place the blade at the edge of the bowl and draw it through the wood in a gentle arc, so that the curve of the blade follows the hollow.
- If you carve with the grain from the edge to the deepest point, the wood is less likely to tear out. If the grain changes direction, turn the workpiece and cut from the other direction.
- Take several thin shavings rather than one thick one, so that you keep control over the wall thickness.
- Check the wall thickness regularly with your fingers before going deeper.
Blade care
Carbon steel can rust. Wipe the blade dry after carving, store the knife in a dry place and rub the blade regularly with a little camellia oil. If the edge starts to dull, restore it with a leather strop or a round sharpening rod instead of pressing harder when carving. A blunt knife is more likely to slip and tear out the fibres.
