BeaverCraft S01X – whittling knife and spoon knife in a leather case

The BeaverCraft S01X spoon carving set contains a whittling knife and a spoon knife (hook knife) with handles made of European walnut. It also comes with a leather case, leather protective sheaths, a leather strop and a polishing compound. With it you can carve spoons, kuksas and other small wooden items, from roughing out to hollowing.

The whittling knife has an 80 mm blade with a Scandi grind. You use it to remove wood and also to work out fine details. The spoon knife is a right-handed model with a rounded blade and a single-bevel grind, designed for hollowing out spoon bowls and dishes. Both blades are made of 1066 carbon steel with 57–59 HRC. The handles are polished and treated with natural linseed oil.

Which wood?

According to the manufacturer, the knives have a 20° sharpening angle and are recommended for softwood, such as lime (linden). They are not intended for hardwood, as the fine edge dulls faster there. Both knives are suitable for carving spoons and kuksas. Because the spoon knife is ground for right-handers, the set mainly suits carvers who work right-handed.

Carving a spoon

Use the whittling knife first to carve the outer shape of the bowl and handle from the blank. Details such as the transitions at the base of the handle come last. Then hollow out the bowl with the spoon knife in thin shavings, checking the wall thickness regularly. Always carve away from your body and never place your holding hand in front of the blade. A cut-resistant glove on that hand gives extra protection.

Sharpening and storing the blades

Blunt blades slip and are more likely to cause accidents than sharp ones. Apply a little polishing compound to the leather strop and draw the blade over the leather with the spine leading, flat on the bevel, never edge first. After carving, put the leather protective sheaths on and place the knives in the case. This keeps the edge protected.
