The BeaverCraft SK2 Long is a spoon carving knife with a long handle for hollowing out spoons, kuksas, bowls, ladles and cups in softwood and hardwood. The blade has a 30 mm curve diameter, is ground on both sides and suits right- and left-handed users. It is made of high-carbon steel.

The ash handle is 300 mm long and treated with natural linseed oil. The long handle lets you guide the knife with both hands, so you need less force, especially in hardwood.

Hollowing with the long handle

Clamp the workpiece securely or hold it so that your hands are never in the line of the cut. Place the curve of the blade at the edge of the hollow and take several thin shavings rather than one thick one. Work with the grain, as the wood tears out when you cut against it. In hardwood the long handle helps: one hand guides at the end of the handle, the other closer to the blade, so you control the cut with little effort.

Choosing the size and care

With a 30 mm curve diameter, the knife suits larger hollows such as ladles, bowls, kuksas and cups. For very small spoon bowls or fine details, a narrower blade is easier to handle. Strop the blade regularly: a blunt edge needs more force and slips more easily.
