Gütermann Jeans Thread Set – Extra Strong and Jeans Thread in a Bicolour Look

The Gütermann Jeans thread set contains 5 reels of sewing thread for denim: 3 reels of Extra Strong with 100 m each and 2 reels of jeans thread with 200 m each. That makes 700 m in total. You can use it to darn and repair denim, sew overlock and safety seams and add fine decorative stitches, by hand or on the sewing machine.

The bicolour look helps you match the seam to the colour of the denim. When darning, the repair is less noticeable, and the seam also gets a subtle accent.

Which thread for what?

The two threads in the set differ in thickness and material. Extra Strong (No. 40, 100% polyester) is the sturdier thread and suits seams that are meant to show, such as decorative stitches or repairs in areas under strain. The finer jeans thread (No. 75, 70% polyester, 30% cotton) comes with a more generous 200 m per reel and suits longer seams and darning. Choose a needle to match the thread: NM 70–100 for Extra Strong, NM 80–100 for the jeans thread.

How to darn jeans

For a tear or a worn-through knee, place a suitable piece of fabric underneath the damaged area from the inside. Then sew back and forth across the area with close, parallel stitches, using a short stitch length on the machine. Test the stitch length and thread tension on an offcut first so that the dense denim does not pucker.
