Gütermann Linen Thread – tear-resistant thread for buttons and heavy fabrics

Gütermann linen thread (art. no. 744573) is a hand-sewing thread made from 100 % linen for seams that take a lot of strain. You can use it to sew on buttons and to work firm, heavy fabrics such as canvas, leather or fabrics for bags, rucksacks and workwear. According to Gütermann, this natural thread is very tear-resistant.

The reel holds 50 m (55 yds). That is enough to roughly plan the quantity for individual projects such as bag repairs or several buttons. Choose your colour from the options.

What the linen thread is suited to

Linen is a strong natural fibre, so the thread stands up well to tension and friction. This pays off when sewing on buttons, which are under constant strain every time they are fastened, and on seams of bags, rucksacks or workwear. Canvas and leather tend to give way at the seam with a thin thread, so the strong thread gives you more in reserve. The thread is intended for hand sewing.

Sewing on a button firmly

Take a suitable length of thread and pass it through the buttonholes several times. Place a matchstick or a thick needle between the button and the fabric so that a small gap is left. Then pull the button upwards, wind the thread a few times around the stitches between the button and the fabric and fasten it off securely on the reverse. This way the button sits well even on thick fabric and can be fastened easily. With leather, pierce the holes beforehand so that you do not have to force the needle through.
