Schmincke Norma Blue Linseed Oil – water-thinnable binder additive for oil paints
Schmincke Norma Blue linseed oil is a modified, water-thinnable linseed oil that you add to water-mixable oil paints as extra binder. It was developed for Schmincke's water-mixable oil paint NORMA Blue and contains only modified linseed oil. According to Schmincke, you can also use it with traditional oil paints.
With more binder the paint becomes fatter and drying is delayed. This gives you more time for blending and working wet-in-wet. Because the oil is water-thinnable, it suits a way of painting in which you want to work without traditional solvents.
Using the linseed oil
Put some paint on the palette, add a little linseed oil and mix the two thoroughly before you paint. Start with small amounts and try the mixture out on a test piece. That way you can see how flow and drying change before you transfer it to your painting.
- Add a little oil: the paint becomes fatter and dries more slowly
- More oil extends the working time, so the layer stays workable for longer
- With several layers, work lean in the lower layers and fatter in the upper ones so that the paint layer does not crack
When to use the linseed oil
You use it when your water-mixable oil paint seems too stiff or too lean for glazes or soft transitions. Since it is suitable for traditional oil paints, you can also use it if you work with both types of paint side by side and want a uniform binder.
