It contains a pencil, graphite pencil, charcoal pencil, oil-base pencils, pastel pencils, pastel chalks and a kneadable eraser. You can move from fine lines to soft areas of tone without having to gather individual pencils together.

According to Faber-Castell, the Pitt Monochrome chalks are harder than ordinary pastel chalks when used for drawing. This means the lines do not dissolve completely when blended. The set is made in Germany, and the metal tin makes it easy to carry when you are out and about.

Which pencil to use for what

The selection covers everything from the preliminary drawing to shading. How you use it depends on your subject:

• Castell 9000 (2B) and Graphite Pure (6B): the 2B pencil suits the preliminary drawing, while the softer 6B pencil is for dark shadows and strong lines.
• Charcoal pencil medium: for deep blacks and quick, broad hatching.
• Pitt Oil Base in black medium and sanguine: Faber-Castell complements sanguine and sepia chalks with grease-free and oil-based drawing pencils for details and lines.
• Pastel pencils and pastel chalks: the pencils add accents, while the four chalks cover larger areas.
• Kneadable eraser: you shape it by hand and dab it on the paper to lift highlights out of charcoal and graphite.

Tips for working

Charcoal and chalk easily rub off on your hand. Place a clean sheet of paper under your drawing hand and work from top to bottom. Harder chalks such as those in the Pitt Monochrome range can be blended without the lines disappearing completely. This keeps structure in the picture, even when you soften the transitions.

12-piece or 21-piece set?

Faber-Castell also offers the Pitt Monochrome sets in a metal tin with 21 pieces. The larger set also contains, among other things, more pastel chalks and additional charcoal pencils. The 12-piece set is the more compact choice for beginners and travel.
