The Faber-Castell Pitt Graphite Set (art. no. 112972) is a drawing set with 11 pieces in a metal tin. It contains graphite pencils in different degrees of softness, watercolour graphite pencils, a graphite chalk, an eraser and a watercolour brush. You can sketch and draw on the go just as well as at your desk.

The pencils range from 2B to 8B. The higher the B number, the softer the lead and the darker and more velvety the line. The leads of the Castell 9000 are protected against breakage by the SV bonding process. This means the lead is less likely to break if the pencil takes a knock in the tin or in your bag.

Which pencil for which purpose?

The 2B pencils are suited to preliminary sketches, outlines and light to medium tones. With 6B and 8B you can lay down strong shadows and deep blacks. The jumbo pencils make broader lines and suit larger areas. Use the 6B graphite chalk for broad, soft hatching that you blend with your finger or a blending stump. The eraser lets you lift out highlights or correct individual lines.

Working with the watercolour graphite pencils

You can use the Graphite Aquarelle pencils in 2B and 8B like ordinary graphite pencils and then work over them with water. First shade the area you want while the pencil is still dry. Then go over it with a damp, not dripping, brush until the graphite spreads into a soft grey tone. Choose a paper that can cope with moisture so that it does not cockle. If you apply the light pencil first and then the dark one only in the shadow areas, you will get soft transitions.
