The Faber-Castell Pitt Graphite MATT Set (art. no. 115220) contains eight graphite pencils in the grades HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B, 10B, 12B and 14B, plus a paper stump, sharpener and eraser. That gives you everything you need for matt graphite drawings, from fine sketching lines to deep black areas.

The lead is formulated so that the line has a matt finish and shows only a faint reflection on the paper. Ordinary graphite shines in raking light, which is a nuisance above all in dark, solid areas. The difference is particularly visible when compared directly with classic pencils. According to Faber-Castell, the pencils are extra break-resistant and have a high tonal density for great depth. The wood comes from certified forestry, and the pencils are finished with water-based lacquer.

Which grade for what?

The set covers the entire range of grades of the Pitt Graphite Matt. The higher the B number, the softer and darker the line.

• HB and 2B: preliminary drawing, fine lines and light tones
• 4B and 6B: midtones and modelling
• 8B to 14B: deep shadows and rich, dark areas

Working with the set

Lay in the drawing lightly with HB or 2B and work up step by step to the softer pencils. That keeps the light areas clean, and you add the darkest areas last. Soft graphite grades smudge easily, so place a sheet of paper under your drawing hand. Use the paper stump to blend transitions softly and the eraser to lift highlights again. Sharpen soft leads carefully so that the point does not break. If you only need a few grades to begin with, Faber-Castell also offers a smaller MATT set with 6 pieces; the pencils are also available individually.
