Amsterdam Gel Medium Gloss – thick acrylic medium for gloss and texture

Royal Talens Amsterdam Gel Medium Gloss makes acrylic paint thicker and lets you apply heavy paint in a single stroke. Wet, the gel is milky white; as it dries it turns clear and transparent. The gloss version increases the gloss and transparency of your paint and gives paintings more texture and depth.

The tub contains 250 ml. Once dry, the gel is waterproof. According to the manufacturer, its adhesive properties also make it suitable for mixed-media techniques, for example for sticking down papers or collage elements.

Working with the gel medium

You can apply the gel neat or mix it into acrylic paint. The more medium in the mixture, the more transparent the paint becomes, while the consistency stays thick. This lets you build up transparent, glossy glazes or create textures with a palette knife. Work at temperatures above 10 °C and let each thick layer dry completely before you continue painting. The gel can be thinned with water, but with a lot of water it loses its thickness.

Surfaces and sticking

The gel adheres to grease-free and reasonably absorbent surfaces such as canvas, paper or wood. For collages and mixed techniques you can use it as an adhesive: apply a thin layer to both surfaces and press the material down firmly. As the gel dries transparent, paper underneath remains visible.

Gloss or matt?

Royal Talens offers the gel medium in gloss and matt. Gloss increases the gloss and transparency of the paint, while matt gives a less shiny surface. The gloss version is available in 250, 500 and 1,000 ml. Store frost-free so that the gel remains usable.
