Royal Talens Pumice Texture Paste – Gritty Textures for Acrylic Painting

The medium-grain pumice texture paste is one of the effect painting media in the Royal Talens Amsterdam range. You can use it to create gritty textures and relief effects on your painting. Use it neat or mix it with acrylic paint. Once dry, it is waterproof and can be painted over with acrylic paint.

The paste is grey. Because the painting medium is itself coloured, it affects the colours you mix into it or paint over it, so bear this in mind when choosing your colours. You can apply the paste in thick layers and work it while it is still drying. It is also used in model making, for example for concrete, stone or gravel.

Working with the paste

Apply the paste to the painting surface with a spatula, palette knife or stiff brush. For a strong relief, apply it thickly. While it is still wet, you can shape the surface: spread it, texture it, scratch into it or cut it. Thick layers take longer to dry through, so allow them plenty of time. You can then paint over the surface with acrylic paint. Alternatively, mix the paint into the paste beforehand. Only use it at temperatures above 10 °C and store it frost-free. Clean your tools with water, preferably before the paste starts to dry.

Which grain size to choose

Royal Talens offers the paste in fine, medium and coarse grains. Medium sits in between: the texture is clearly gritty, but less rough than the coarse version. It suits reliefs, rocks, brickwork or rough surfaces in model landscapes. For very fine transitions choose the fine grain, and for an especially rough surface the coarse one.
