Royal Talens Glass Bead Gel – pearly texture for acrylic painting

Royal Talens glass bead gel (Amsterdam painting medium, pearl) is a painting medium for acrylic painting. It contains tiny, round glass beads that create a pearly texture on the painting surface. You can apply it neat or mix it with acrylic paint. This gives backgrounds, water, skies or jewellery details a fine, grainy surface.

The effect is strongest when you use the gel undiluted or with transparent acrylic paint. If you mix it with opaque paint, the pigment covers the glass beads. It is therefore best to choose transparent shades. Once dry, the gel is waterproof.

Working with the glass bead gel

Apply the gel straight from the jar if you want a strong pearly texture, for example with a brush or palette knife. For a more delicate effect, mix it with transparent acrylic paint. The paint tints the gel and the glass beads stay visible. Work at temperatures above 10 °C. Test the mixture on a test piece first, as the texture looks different depending on the colour and the thickness of application.

Care and storage

Because the gel is waterproof once dry, wash brushes and palette knives straight after use, while it is still wet. Keep the jar tightly closed and protected from frost.
