Royal Talens Heavy Gel Medium Gloss – thick acrylic gel for gloss, transparency and texture

Royal Talens Amsterdam Heavy Gel Medium Gloss (art. no. 24173015) is an extra-thick, milky white painting medium for acrylic paints. It makes colour more transparent and glossier without losing viscosity, and adds more texture and depth to your work. Applied neat, it dries to a flexible, glossy, colourless and transparent film.

The tub contains 250 ml. The gel can be thinned with water and is waterproof once dry. It adheres to all grease-free, reasonably absorbent surfaces. Thanks to its adhesive properties, it can also be used as an adhesive for mixed-media techniques such as collage.

Working with the gel

You can use the gel neat or mixed with acrylic paint. The more medium in the paint, the more transparent it becomes, while the thick consistency is retained. This lets you build up transparent glazing layers or create raised textures with a brush or palette knife. If you thin the gel with water, the mixture becomes more fluid and loses body.

• Mix the gel with acrylic paint or apply it neat to a grease-free surface
• The gel looks milky when wet and only turns clear as it dries, so judge the colour effect once it is dry
• Keep your tools damp and clean them with water after use while the gel is still wet, as it is waterproof once dry

Choosing and storage

This gel has a glossy finish. The gel medium range includes other gels with a different texture or a matt finish, for example Extra Heavy Gel Medium or Gel Medium. Choose Heavy Gel Medium if you want strong, thick textures together with gloss and transparency. Store the tub closed and frost-free.
