Staedtler Mars Estompe – 4 paper blending stumps for soft transitions

The Staedtler Mars Estompe set contains 4 paper blending stumps in sizes 1, 4, 6 and 8. You can use them to blend charcoal, pencil, chalk and pastel pencils and to create soft transitions and shading.

The four sizes cover fine details as well as larger areas, so you do not have to make do with a single tip for everything. If the tip of a stump becomes dirty or blunt, you can re-sharpen and clean it with sandpaper. This keeps it usable for longer.

Blending with a paper stump

First draw in the area with charcoal, pencil, chalk or pastel pencil, then run the tip of the stump over the lines in small circular movements or in even strokes. For fine details and small areas, use one of the smaller sizes; for larger areas, one of the larger ones. If possible, use a separate stump for each drawing material, so that you do not carry traces of charcoal or pastel into a pencil drawing.

Re-sharpening the stumps

If the tip is dirty or worn, rub it on sandpaper or glasspaper, turning the stump slowly as you do so. This removes the residue of colour and gives you a clean tip again.
