Faber-Castell Pitt compressed charcoal pencil – grease-free black drawing charcoal
The Faber-Castell Pitt compressed charcoal pencil is a grease- and oil-free black drawing charcoal for sketches, studies and drawings. It has a very soft, smooth application and gives an intense black. Crushed drawing charcoal, combined with soot and clay, gives the compressed charcoal its deep black colour and makes different degrees of hardness possible. Choose the degree of hardness from the options.
The charcoal is easy to rub in and blend. You can correct it easily and draw over it again and again. Blending the strokes gives drawings additional expressiveness.
Working with compressed charcoal
First draw the basic shape with light pressure and build up the darker areas gradually. Use your finger, a blending stump or a cloth to rub the strokes into soft tonal values. If you have applied too much charcoal, you can correct it and then redraw the area. Because charcoal smudges easily, protect the finished drawing with fixative and do not stack drawings on top of each other unprotected when transporting them.
Which degree of hardness should you choose?
The degree of hardness determines how soft and dark the charcoal marks. The softer the grade, the more velvety and blacker the line. Harder grades are better suited to finer lines and contours. Choose the grade you need from the options.
