Conté à Paris Studio Sketching Pencils – 12 Pencils in a Metal Tin for Sketches and Studies
This Conté à Paris set contains 12 sketching pencils in a metal tin, intended for landscapes, figure drawings, portraits and still lifes. You get graphite, sepia, sanguine, charcoal, carbone, pierre noire and a white pencil, some in several grades. This lets you try different drawing materials without having to gather individual pencils. The set suits hobby artists, students and professionals.
The metal tin protects the pencils when you carry them out sketching or to the studio. The pencils are made in France.
Which pencil for what?
The twelve pencils cover light to deep black tones. The selection lets you compare drawing styles and grades directly:
- Graphite HB and 2B (601): the thinner 3 mm leads for preliminary drawing, outlines and fine detail
- Sepia (617) and Sanguine (610): warm browns and reds, classic for figure and portrait studies
- Blanc (630): for highlights, especially on toned paper
- Fusain Charcoal HB and 2B (728) and Carbone HB and 3B (722): for soft, dark areas and strong blacks
- Pierre Noire H, B and 3B (1710): three pencils in three grades for drawings from fine to deep black
Working with the set
Sharpen the pencils before drawing so that you can make fine lines. The 5 mm leads are thicker than the 3 mm graphite leads. They are therefore particularly suited to broad strokes and large areas, for example using the tip for lines and the side for shaded areas. Start with the lighter grades and use the darker 3B pencils last, as soft leads are harder to correct and smudge more easily. If you want to keep a finished drawing, you can protect it with fixative. Test the fixative on a sample sheet first, as it can slightly alter sepia, sanguine and white.
