Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-233 Eucalyptus – grey-green underglaze for decoration and solid areas

Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-233 Eucalyptus is an underglaze in a soft grey-green. You can use it to decorate ceramics, for example with botanical patterns, fine lines or calm blocks of colour. It is intended for greenware or bisque. According to Mayco, you can also apply it to wet or leather-hard clay and then fire it to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The firing range runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart).

Without glaze, the colour fires to a matt finish. A clear or matt glaze over the top intensifies the shade. Because clay and kilns differ, Mayco recommends testing with your own clay and in your own kiln. Eucalyptus belongs to the Mayco Fundamentals Underglazes series, which includes other shades such as Olive (UG-232) and Aquamarine (UG-229).

Applying the underglaze

Shake the jar well before use. One coat looks translucent; for full coverage, apply 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next. The colours in the series can be mixed with one another, so you can create your own shades.

Under clear glaze and for tableware

A clear glaze over the underglaze makes the colour more intense. Mayco also permits firing with clear glaze in a single firing. If blisters or craters form, a hold time of 15 minutes helps, according to Mayco. For tableware, the underglaze is only intended for use under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without clear glaze, it is not dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the ACMI AP seal indicates a product exempt from hazard labelling.
